Mayor Penny's Reading challenge in May
The Mayor’s Reading Challenge is back with a new name. Mayor Penny Webster challenges Rodney’s school-aged children to “Read half an hour a day for the month of May”.
Last year, 692 Rodney school-aged children and teenagers completed the challenge. This year Mayor Penny hopes that even more children and teenagers will join the challenge and reap the benefits that daily reading brings.
The challenge is open to all Rodney school-age children and teenagers. Those who complete it are awarded a certificate and go in a draw to win a bike or consolation prizes. Going into a Rodney Library twice during the challenge earns an extra entry in the prize draw.
The Challenge has been sponsored by Rotary and Lions Clubs and Freeride’n’ bike shop.
Entry forms are available from Rodney Libraries and participating schools, or can be downloaded as a pdf from the library website. Children who live a long way from a library may phone a library and get the entry form posted to them.

Rodney Writes - Kiwi Culture
Congratulations to the winners of the Rodney Writes competition. The awards ceremony was held last night at Whangaparaoa Library and Service Centre.
The Premier Award was won by Camille Butler with 'Born in a tent' and Elizabeth Farris was the runner up with 'Happy as Larry'.
The winner of the Novice Award was Jo Wood with 'Good on ya mate' and the runner up was Linda Marincas with 'Finding love in an old dunger'.
The Young Writers Award was won by Amy Jackson with 'The Jandal' and Michael Curreen was the runner up with 'Tomato sauce'.

Anzac Day Services in Rodney District
Silverdale and Districts Returned Services Association (Incorporated)
The Silverdale and Districts RSA extends a cordial invitation to all kindred clubs, associations and public, i.e. Silverdale and Manly Fire Brigade, Red Cross, St John Ambulance, Women’s Division, Girl Guides, Brownies, Scouts, Sea Scouts and Cubs, Youth and Service organisations and local schools and colleges, to join them in their Anzac Day parade and church service. A special invitation is extended to dependents of deceased veterans to march wearing the medals of their late family members. The parade and march past the Cenotaph is scheduled to commence at 11.00am at our Vipond Road property. The church service is to be held inside if the weather is inclement. Would representatives of organisations wishing to take part in the parade, as well as persons wishing to lay wreaths, please contact the Secretary/Manager on telephone 09 424 9026. The Parade Commander will be Sqn. Ldr. G White, Ret’d. Food and refreshments will be provided for the veterans and their caregivers, Silverdale RSA members, parade participants and children. NOTE: The RSA Clubrooms will remain closed from 10.15am until after the parade and church service are finished.

Lest We Forget
Auckland Museum was built as a memorial to the 12,000 people from the Auckland province who died in the First and Second World wars. Each autumn the Museum remembers the great sacrifices made by these people, people who did their best for others — and for their children’s future. They have an extensive programme planned for the day which can be found on their website. No donation will be asked for on this day.
Illuminate ANZAC Day with Auckland Museum
April 22, 23 & 24 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
Auckland Museum has secured the rights to project the only known film of the Gallipoli campaign onto the outside of its grand entrance. Heroes of Gallipoli will be shown for the three nights leading up to the ANZAC day commemorations.
Visitors are invited to watch the 20 minute film, which will play on continuous loop from 7.30pm to 10.00pm, from the steps of the cenotaph and then come inside the Museum to sign a digital book of remembrance, look up relatives war records on the Museums Cenotaph database and enjoy some light refreshments from the café.
Heroes of Gallipoli includes scenes of British, New Zealand and Australian troops. It was shot by Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett, a famous English war correspondent. Oscar winning film director, Peter Jackson’s outstanding restoration has just been listed with the UNESCO’s Memory of the World programme.

Jodi Picoult - Change of heart

Liar, liar, pants on fire
Another author is in the news for lying about the research he'd done. Or rather, not done. Thomas Kohnstamm has written a book called "Do travel writers go to hell? : a swashbuckling tale of high adventures, questionable ethics, and professional hedonism". It's about his life as a (former) writer for Lonely Planet travel guides. You can hear him talk about it at the Auckland Readers and Writers Festival in May. As the the Lonely Planet website says "Specifically, Thomas claims that during his time as a travel author, he skipped visiting certain destinations, plagiarised from other sources and traded good reviews for in-kind favours. " The Lonely Planet website has both a response and a specially set-up forum for people to discuss the issue. It goes on to detail what they've managed to find out so far.
Who else has lied? James Frey, author of "A million little pieces" was in the news in early 2006 for conning Oprah. He'd exaggerated events including a jail stint that was hours, not days, long. "Forbidden love : a harrowing true story of love and revenge in Jordan" by Norma Khouri wasn't a true story after all. Not only did she lie in the book but she lied in person as well.
Why do I care so much? They were all published as non-fiction/information books. A genre that I can usually trust. I understand that unless authors are being followed around with cameras and recording equipment it's unlikely that they'll present a truely accurate record of events. However, I do expect them to be in the ballpark. I like my stories to be in fiction thanks.

Libraries more accessible for North Shore and Rodney residents
North Shore City and Rodney residents and ratepayers will now be able to borrow books from each others’ libraries free of charge.
As from Monday April 14, residents and ratepayers from both areas will be able to join libraries in their neighbouring city without having to pay a subscription.
North Shore City’s library services manager, Geoff Chamberlain, says the new borrowing system will make access to libraries much easier.
“People who regularly pop across to Rodney from North Shore City or vice versa will now be able to join a local library without having to pay for it,” he says.
“As our closest neighbour, we already have a large number of subscribers from Rodney. Many people travel from one city to the other for shopping, social activities or work, and it’s often easier to visit a nearby library than travel further afield,” says Geoff.
Prior to this new borrowing system being introduced people who lived outside council boundaries were charged an annual membership fee of $120 in North Shore City and $50 in Rodney to join each others’ libraries.
Rodney’s acting libraries manager, Vicki Clarke welcomes this new co-operative approach.
“We are continuously looking at ways to improve our library services. Now residents from North Shore and Rodney will have access to a wider range of books and library resources,” she says.
“Our shared catalogue enables library users to search for items held at other libraries, and now they will be able to borrow them without having to pay a fee.”
North Shore or Rodney residents wishing to benefit from this new arrangement will need to join a library in the neighbouring council area and will then be given their own library card for use within that area.
The reciprocal borrowing arrangement between North Shore and Rodney is an eLGAR initiative. eLGAR is made up of Auckland, Manukau, North Shore, Rodney and Waitakere libraries. Its members share a library management system and are working together to provide better library services across the region. It is likely that eLGAR will seek to have reciprocal borrowing rights for all citizens across the region but it will be a while before any Auckland-wide agreement is reached.
Anyone wanting more information about reciprocal borrowing between North Shore and Rodney should visit their local library or contact North Shore Libraries on 09 486 8600 or Rodney Libraries on 0800 426 5169.

FREE PRESENTATION : S.K.I.P speaker at Orewa Library
A presentation from S.K.I.P. (Strategies with Kids, Information for Parents) will be held at Orewa Library on Friday 18 April at 6pm. Nibbles and juice provided. Parents and kids welcome. The session is FREE and reports from previous sessions have been excellent.

Auckland Writers and Readers festival - tickets available now
I'm so excited. My guide to the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival '08 arrived this week. The festival is on in the middle of May - Wednesday 14 - Sunday 18. Tickets are available now from the-edge website or you can choose to go the snail mail route. I'd get in quick as there are some great authors lined up and the events are sure to be well attended.
The 'New Zealand Listener Opening night' event features J.M. Coetzee, Junot Diaz, Witi Ihimaera and Sarah Hall chaired by Kim Hill. "Listen to their voices and you will always hear the rhythm of their intonations whenever you read their work in future. A highly anticipated event of readings." The festival website has a little bio for each invited author and the event chairs. Have a look at the A-Z list.

Remembering the Wahine
For some reason I always think of the Wahine tragedy as part of New Zealand's long past history. Sure I have run across people in my time who can remember it happening and even someone who was one of the lucky survivors. But it was sobering watching the documentary last week to realise that it actually happened in my lifetime. And one of my fellow librarians who lived in Wellington at the time can vividly remember the storm and the family huddling in the middle of the living room.
Today marks 40 years since the tragedy, with special services (both public and private) being held around Wellington to mark the occasion (and probably many more private moments around the country as people remember.
There are some excellent resources for those wanting to know more about the Wahine.

- The Maritime New Zealand website has a comprehensive history of the vessel and the events of the day.
- Both the Wellington Library and the Christchurch Library have excellent resource pages.
- The National Library has links through the newspapers and images from the period
- Rodney Libraries have a number of books about the Wahine disaster, both fiction and non-fiction, for both adult and children. On of my favourites for children is Abandon ship! : the diary of Debbie Atherton, Wellington, 1968 (Shirley Corlett) which is part of the My Story series. Each event is narrated in diary form by a child who is part of the action. For a slightly higher age group try No Safe Harbour (David Hill).

Pulitzer Prize to Bob Dylan
Singer-songwriter Bob Dylan has received an honorary Pulitzer Prize for his "profound impact on popular music and American culture".
The special music award recognised the 66-year-old's "lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power". Prize administrator Sig Gissler said the honour "reflects the efforts of the Pulitzer board to broaden the scope of the music prize".
The awards, named after newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer, carry a prize of $US10,000 ($NZ12,828).
Previous recipients of the special musical Pulitzer include jazz icon John Coltrane, composer George Gershwin and science-fiction author Ray Bradbury.
Dylan's award marks the first time the panel has recognised a rock musician.

Junot Diaz won the fiction prize for The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.The Washington Post won six Pulitzers, including the prestigious Public Service gold medal award for its reporting on conditions of United States war veterans at the Walter Reed military hospital

Summits for Ed Tribute Tour
The "Summits for Ed Tribute Tour" comes to Rodney in April so if you want to take part in a final local ceremony as part of a nationwide tribute, this is your chance.
The Rodney Summit will be The Dome, just north of Warkworth and the walk will take place on Wednesday 16th April from 8.00 am. The meeting place is the Dome Tearooms carpark on State Highway 1. The walk to the summit usually takes about an hour.
There are two parts to the summit ceremony. The first part is the walk which includes local celebrities and identities and is being overseen by local Lions Club members. For the second part of the ceremony all participants are asked to bring a rock, stone or pebble from their favourite place which will be incorporated into a memorial cairn at the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre at Tongariro.

Book of the week: "Island of the Lost" by Joan Druett
"Island of the lost : shipwrecked at the edge of the world" by Joan Druett has been picked up by South Pacific Pictures. Published in 2007 the book is about two crews shipwrecked on opposite ends of an island at around about the same time. Unfortunately a great big mountain range is in between them, leading each group to think they are the only ones on the island. What happens next sounds like a horrible social experiment gone wrong - here's the blurb..."In early 1864, heading back to Australia after a failed mining expedition, the crew of the Grafton encountered a violent storm and found themselves shipwrecked in the Auckland Islands, off the coast of New Zealand. Druett, a maritime historian (In the Wake of Madness), draws upon the journals of the ship's captain, Thomas Musgrave and prospector Francois Raynal to reveal how the crew pulled together and made the best of their circumstances for nearly two years. By contrast, when the Invercauld ran aground on the other side of the island months later-beyond an impassable mountain range, and hence unaware they were not alone-the surviving sailors quickly began eating their dead crewmates out of desperation. Soon, only three remained, the ineffectual captain and another officer being kept alive by a resourceful seaman."

Official opening of Atiu Creek Regional Park
Saturday 5th April 2008, 11am - 3pm.
Atiu Creek Farm, near Wellsford, was gifted to the people of New Zealand by Pierre and Jackie Chatelanat in October 2005. On opening day visitors will be able to explore the park and ranger-guided and self-guided walks will be on offer. A shuttle bus loop will allow people to ‘hop on and hop off' and take in lookout points, farm machinery displays and a little of the history of the property. Gates open at 9.30am and entry to the park is free.The Albertland Museum has kindly prepared a display, showcasing local history with a particular emphasis on Atiu Creek Regional Park.The official opening ceremony will take place at 12.00pm with speeches by special guests and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. The Leisure Centre Stanmore Bay Sunday 6th April 2008 - 10.30 to 12.30. Today it's about Children's Books
Today is International Children's Book Day. This year the theme is "books Enlighten; Knowledge delights"
Each year a member country of IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) sponsors an annual celebration of children's books on 2 April, which is Hans Christian Andersen's birthday. In 2008 Thailand has the honour of being the sponsoring country and their message to the children of the world can be found on the Storylines website.
The Storylines organisation marked the occasion with some awards of their own over the weekend, including the 2008 release of their annual list of notable books. Lots of familiar names in here including Lynley Dodd with the latest Hairy McLary tale, Melanie Drewery, Gavin Bishop and Lorraine Orman. For the full list checkout the Storylines awards page .
"The judging panel would like to make special mention of Illustrated Myths & Legends of the Pacific by AW Reed, illustrated by Jenny Cooper. Reed (now Raupo Publishing). The stories were first published in 1969 as Fairy Tales from the Pacific Islands. The panel considers this edition, with new illustrations, to be a treasure for New Zealand children." I can certainly second this. It is a lovely book.
In Rodney several of our libraries are having special storytimes reading stories from around the world. Come along and enjoy the fun at:

April Fool's
Everything you read, hear or see today will be taken with a grain of salt. Yes - it's the the 1st of April when pranksters big and small, at home and internationally, feel it is their duty to fool those gullible members of the populace.
The history of April Fool's day is a little murky but one of the more generally accepted theories is that it came about when the calendar was changed back in the mid 16th century. The old calendar had 1st April as New year's Day. There are some great websites which talk about the origins of the day (try The Fools Day), and more to the point, detail some of the best hoaxes played out. One of my favourites is the Italian spaghetti crop hoax that BBC programme Panorama reported in 1957. It's always the people you least expect that get you the best. The Museum of Hoaxes is a site full of pranks played around the world and lots more information as well.
In Rodney, some of the libraries are running a special promotion to celebrate the 1st of April. Rent a music CD for 2 weeks for just $2 and we will let you take a book as well, for FREE.
Meanwhile, as a past victim of April Fool's jokes, I am battening down the hatches today and hoping that noone I know is in the mood to play a prank. A faint hope probably knowing some of my friends, but I can dream.
